There are two sides of the issue, such as whether a peace officer would be able to respond when witnessing a potentially violent crime. But what about if the off duty activities mean heading to a bar?

Tulsa World is reporting:

“A former Tulsa police officer pleaded guilty Friday morning to feloniously pointing a firearm and carrying a firearm while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Thomas Fees resigned from the force in May as part of efforts to resolve the two firearm counts filed against him.”

According to the report he remains free on bond. We just have to ask, would anyone else who was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and pointed a gun at someone be free on bond?

Talk to any anti-firearm zealot and they’ll likely tell you that if guns were banned, no one would ever have to stare down the barrel again. But what if the police are still armed? Couldn’t a police officer then break the law and aim a gun at you – say in a bar? Well, this happened not once but twice this past weekend.

The Associated Press, via The Dallas Morning News reported:

“An off-duty police officer is accused of hitting two bar workers and pulling a gun on them because they refused to let him back inside after closing. Sgt. Hector Roa, 37, was charged Sunday with two counts of aggravated assault, Dallas police said.”

Meanwhile, to the north, in Tulsa, KTUL noted:

“A Tulsa Police officer is suspended with pay after he pulls a gun near a bar. It happened early Saturday morning at a bar near 17th and Boston. According to arrest reports, 33-year-old officer Thomas Fees was asked to leave the bar after a disturbance.”

Now in fairness, these are isolated incidents. But these show that there is still one law for the police in most states, and another law for the law-abiding citizens. As the issue of guns in bars, in parks, in restaurants is brought up, the debate fails to recognize that one class of people already get to bring guns into these places. We support the police, and yes we see what happens when alcohol and guns mix. These were regrettable incidents, but it proof that there is a case to be made for an armed citizenry.

What would have happened had either these officers started blasting away? Shouldn’t the public have the right to defend themselves?
