Origins Of Fast And Furious Story Important For Media To Get Right
From our friend David Codrea:
“House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) has distributed a staff briefing paper and draft of the contempt of Congress resolution against Attorney General Eric Holder to Members of the Oversight Committee,” a May 3 press release from Frederick R. Hill Director of Communications for the committee begins.
A copy of the memorandum and draft is posted on the committee website. Highlights include information sharing failures, non-cooperation by the Justice Department, the struggle to get the truth for the family of slain Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, retaliation against whistleblowers, the fueling of violence in Mexico, and “allegations of intentional wrongdoing by Justice officials.” No doubt many outlets will report on this, and the intent of Gun Rights Examiner in its Operation Fast and Furious “gunwalking” coverage has never been to retell stories uncovered by others, but instead to share original sourced findings derived independently or in partnership with Mike Vanderboegh, who blogs at Sipsey Street Irregulars, and who, on December 28, 2010, was the first citizen journalist to report and reach out for confirmation on postings from the CleanUpATF website alleging guns were being walked, and that walked guns were found at the Terry murder scenes.

Huff and Puff: NRA Wants Martin Case to Go Away
We have wondered if anti-gun types get giddy when there is a tragic shooting? We are wondering again as it Denis A. Henigan, Brady Campaign VP offered some thoughts this week for The Huffington Post. He noted:
When the National Rifle Association’s Wayne LaPierre finally spoke out about the Trayvon Martin shooting, it was to decry the media’s coverage of the tragedy as “sensational reporting from Florida.” It’s understandable that the NRA would be uncomfortable with the intense media attention to this particular shooting tragedy.
The media certainly sensationalized the case, and in many ways found George Zimmerman guilty in the court of public opinion. We say so much for due process. But then Henigan noted:
In the NRA’s world, people are neatly divided into two readily identifiable groups: good guys and bad guys. In this imaginary world, we know that legal carriers of guns must be good guys and that good guys use their guns only in legitimate self-defense — that’s what makes them good guys in the first place.
We respond to say that in the mythic world of the anti-gun zealots criminals will heed gun bans. Bad guys won’t buy guns because the “laws” will stop them.

Media Matters Continues to Blast NRA
Isn’t the role of advocacy to lobby and push a specific agenda? Liberal leaning watchdog site Media Matters For America must seem to miss that point, as it questions everything the NRA says about President Obama. It noted earlier this week:
National Rifle Association CEO and Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre took to the opinion pages to once again deploy faulty logic to claim that the reelection of President Barack Obama will precipitate an “all-out war on the Second Amendment.”
The article later added:
The truth is that LaPierre has been pushing conspiracy theories about the elimination of private gun ownership since before the Obama presidency.
The truth is that it is easier to warn about the future that it is to rectify events in the past. This is just simple politics, but for some reason liberals don’t like it when the other side plays this way. Obama has never exactly been a friend to guns, so gun owners should only, and rightfully, assume the worst – or accept the loss of their Second Amendment rights if Obama shows his true colors.
