Who Guards the Guards: Fake Law Enforcement Group Uncovered

The New York Daily News has reported that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has closed down a Yonkers humane society, after it was found that the group was a sham, created to provide badges and guns to up to 16 individuals, including a former Greenburgh town police officer who had previously been fired. The paper noted:

“State law gives guns, badges and peace officer status to humane society cruelty investigators.”

We have to wonder what other dubious fake law enforcement, or similar groups are operating for similar reasons – while law-abiding citizens still have problems legally obtaining firearms.

West Virginia Says No to Bloomberg

The New York Daily News reported this week that finally someone in a sovereign state other than New York is standing up to New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg. The paper notes:

“A legislator there wants to ban the type of undercover stings that Bloomberg has used to showcase illegal gun sales in other states – and throw the mayor’s investigators in jail if necessary.

“‘It’s for us to handle within our own borders,’ said state Sen. Jeffrey Kessler, who is running for governor in 2012. ‘We jealously guard our gun rights, and we’re vocal advocates for the Second Amendment.’”

Kudos to Jeffrey Kessler. It is about time someone stood up to Mikey.

One Sided Local News Story in Daily News Passed Off as News

Where does news end and editorial begin, especially when the piece is about local news? The New York Daily News certainly blurred the lines in a story about a young anti-firearm zealot from Brooklyn. The story pulls no punches, and comes out swinging with this intro:

”At 18, Kristine Arroyo already knows how to stand up to the powerful National Rifle Association – and tomorrow night, she’ll stand up and be honored at Borough President Marty Markowitz’s State of the Borough address.” Read more

Bronx Gun Buyback a Success?

Numerous New York City media outlets are reporting about the “successful” gun buyback in the Bronx, which netted nearly 1,200 firearms… and cost city taxpayers some $184,000 in the process! Of course the NYPD put a good spin on it, according to The New York Daily News, which noted that the police claim to have gotten more than 5,000 “guns off the streets” in recent years:

“We’ll never know, but that’s potentially more than 5,000 lives saved,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said during a press conference at Police Headquarters.

Yes, Police Commissioner Kelly, we’ll never know. We’ll never know if one of these guns was even handed in by a criminal. We’ll never know how many criminals now look to steal guns to sell them for $200, with no questions asked. We’ll never know how many people sold guns that were worthless (or at least worth less than $200) to get a quick score from taxpayers. We’ll never know how many valuable firearms were handed in for a mere $200 as well. We’ll never know.

NBA Players Allowed to Possess Guns!

Last month’s disturbing incident, which allegedly involved NBA player Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards drawing a gun on a teammate, is something we haven’t really been following. There isn’t much to say. Guns aren’t toys and anyone brandishing a firearm in such a way should face severe punishment! There should be no exception, even for those rich and famous.

But what is now on radar is that the media has picked up on a few facets of the story. A recent story in The New York Daily News included this passage:

“An incident involving Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas in which he allegedly drew a firearm on a teammate has set off a firestorm of opinion among current NBA players, who tell of a flourishing gun culture in the NBA. If true, it could spell trouble for NBA commissioner David Stern.” Read more

Raymond W. Kelly Offers Editorial for NY Daily News – We Respond

We respect what men like New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly have done to make our cities safe. There is no doubt that Mr. Kelly is a good man, but we still think some of this tactics go a bit far. While his editorial for The New York Daily News mostly addresses illegal guns, his message puts too much blame on straw purchases and the so-called “gun show loophole,” without putting the real blame on the scum who want the guns in the first place. Maybe if we were tougher on the real criminals, than law abiding citizens wouldn’t have to jump through stupid hoops to buy firearms. While the city worries about loopholes, it makes it so difficult for collectors, hunters and sports shooters. In the end New York City will be a land where only the police and criminals have guns. That’s a city many wouldn’t want to live in.
