Gun-Rights Rallies Held This Past Weekend
We’re happy to report that the mainstream media can’t ignore the growing gun-rights movement in this country. Here is a recap of some articles (among many others) that appeared this weekend:
- The Maine Sunday Herald noted “Pro-gun rally shines light on liberal laws“
- The Washington Post reported, “Gun-rights advocates gather in Va. and D.C. to celebrate ‘historic moment’“
- The Los Angeles Times reported, “Gun rights supporters rally near Capitol“
- NPR offered “Gun Rights Fans Rally In DC, VA, Some Bearing Arms“
Of course not all of this reporting was free of anti-gun bias, but it is about time that these events are being reported.
Guns Not Selling For Some Gun Stores
If you believe the mainstream media every store in the country is out of ammo, the shelves are bare and there isn’t a gun in sight. But yet, some gun stores are seeing slow business because of new legislation. The Capital in Annapolis, Maryland notes just how tough it can be for some state residents:
“Maryland residents need to apply to state police to get a handgun permit.”
Likewise, while the MSM has continued to post about strong sales, these have mostly dried up, in part due to the sluggish economy. However, while the media was quick to note a surge in gun sales we somehow doubt we’ll see any reports on sales slipping. The media might note sluggish sales of cars, consumer goods and other products, but there will be no news about sagging gun sales we expect.
Firing Back: Ammo Shortage Caused by…
The UnionLeader.com poses and interesting question: “What’s triggering a shortage of guns?” Consider this another example of the mainstream media being a little late on the story. As we’ve complained for months now, this is really old news, but the issue of ammo and even gun shortage comes up time and time again.
Maybe if these stories stopped appearing readers who were on the fence about stockpiling guns and ammo would stop stockpiling guns and ammo, and you know what… the stories would probably stop too. But instead, we’d probably see twisted stores claiming that gun owners now see the light that legislation isn’t coming, that fears about the president were unfounded or that many decided guns aren’t just safe. In other words, look for the MSM to concoct some farfetched stories without doing the requisite research. If it easy enough to report about false fears, why not report about other falsehoods.
CBS News Chicago Says Gun Turn-in Programs Do Little Good
Well, this time we’re going to praise the mainstream media for a change, or at least one of the three news departments in the Windy City. This weekend Chicago is holding a turn-in program – a.k.a. one of those guns for cash programs. While the local ABC news Web site merely announced the event, and the NBC station claimed that the event has taken “18,000 guns from the streets since 2005,” CBS 2 in Chicago has taken the bold step of asking if these programs do any good?
CBS 2 even has a very strong quote from a reliable source:
“Illinois Gun Works Owner Don Mastrianni claims that Chicago’s program to clear its street of guns by offering to buy them and melt them down has probably not prevented even one killing.
“‘Criminals aren’t going to bring in their guns,’ Mastrianni said.”
But the sound bites keep getting better. Police officer David Montgomery was quoted in the article, saying:
“You can always get the guns. There’s the underground market out there. What can you do about it?”
Maybe the rest of the mainstream media will get the message as well.
