Media Matters Tries to Claim Americans Want Gun Control

Liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America tried to put an anti-gun spin on the findings from a Gallup poll. The crew over at Media Matters must not have liked the results, so instead of letting it go, they instead offered some interesting thoughts:

“Indeed, another question included in Gallup’s poll demonstrates robust support for gun violence prevention legislation. 77 percent of respondents feel that the laws covering the sales of firearms should either be stricter or kept as they are now, with only 11 percent calling for them to be weakened. In other words, the vast majority of Americans support reasonable gun control measures; only a small fraction is actually opposed to gun control.”

That isn’t exactly what the poll suggests that “only a small fraction is actually opposed to gun control.” Even Gallup noted:

“In 1991, 68% of Americans favored stricter gun laws and 43% favored a ban on handguns. Those percentages are 43% and 26%, respectively, today.”

But again here is where the media – or in this case a “media watchdog” – doesn’t like the findings and will put its own spin on it. Read more

Savannah Morning News Doesn’t Try to Peg Gun Owners

In reporting about the upcoming Southeastern Guns & Knives Show to be held at the International Trade and Convention Center on Hutchinson Island, writer Donald Heath offers a fair look at what these events really mean. In his piece for The Savannah Morning News, Heath is one of the few writers that doesn’t try to peg gun owners to a specific category.

He makes no mention of angry people, fearful of an impending government ban. Instead, he offers this compelling though:

“There is no typical gun buyer. Some are hunters. Some are collectors. Some like to shoot guns for sport. Some want guns for protection.” Read more

Chances are you won’t actually see more “pro gun” articles from the mainstream media, but the fact is that you might just see less from the MSM and more from gun magazines. According to Daily Finance, gun magazines are on the rise, while the rest of the mainstream media continues to falter. Read more

TPM Writer Misses Mark on Gun Owners

In an editorial for TPM Café writer Leonard Zeskind suggests that gun shows have transformed from a regular event that was about hunting and collectibles, into something aimed (no pun intended) at recruiting a white nationalist movement. He states this by noting:

“A few collectors remain, who display antique weapons in the same way as their cousins might collect stamps, particularly at the smaller weekend events. Nevertheless, as anyone who has been around these shows long enough to remember the time when mahogany exhibits of Civil War muskets were the rule and not the exception.” Read more
