Here is how the media in the UK covers guns and America. It shows a photo of SKS rifles, offers a nasty headline and opens with “facts” that suggest crime is on the rise. That’s business as usual for The Daily Telegraph, which offered this headline: Guns in church and weapons for the mentally ill: America quietly dilutes its gun laws.

The article then offered this introduction:

As Americans rushed to arm themselves over the festive period, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report showed how 8,775 people had been killed in shooting incidents in 2010.

That number is expected to increase for 2011, according to Barry Krisberg, a criminologist at Berkley School of Law, University of California.

Interestingly just this week the Centers for Disease Control announced that homicides are no longer the top cause of preventable death. So where does this “expected t increase” come from? But the article then adds:

America has quietly diluted its weapons laws over the last few years as a result of increased lobbying from pro-gun groups such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), he said.

So the NRA isn’t elected to any office, holds no government position but the British paper essentially suggests this group is rewriting the laws? Basically this “news” article cited a single source and filled it with anti-gun and anti-American bias! This is British tabloid journalism at its very worst!

Ever wonder if those guns that were part of buybacks were really destroyed? On the one hand we feel a sense of loss just thinking that some potentially rare and valuable firearms (valid parts of history in our opinion) might end up being destroyed. But what a more disturbing outcome – namely those very guns (which probably weren’t on the street) ending up in criminal’s hands? The Daily Telegraph offered this bit of news:

“Two policemen have admitted their involvement in the selling of guns handed in to police by the public to be destroyed.”

So should we worry that many of those gun buybacks could be supplying illegal guns? It can’t happen here, right?
