Media Begins to Pick up on Mexican Prison Story
This past weekend the Associated Press was alone in reporting that prison guards in Mexico released violent prisoners, loaned them guns to conduct hits and then let them back in prison in time for the morning roll call. We didn’t know if this story would get much pick up, but apparently it is shocking enough that it is getting attention from the mainstream media after all. Read more
Who Guards the Guards: Mexican Prison Guards Released Prisoners, Lent Them Guns
We hear time and time from the American mainstream media how American firearms supposedly are fueling the war between the Mexican drug cartels. What isn’t reported nearly as much is the corruption south of the border. We know it is bad, but it seldom gets much pick up. Case in point, the Associated Press filed an interesting story this weekend, which received little pick up in the MSM. The facts are actually shocking:
“Mexican prosecutors say guards at a prison let inmates out and lent them guns to massacre 17 people at a party, then allowed them to return to their cells.”
Do you think this story will get much play? Probably not, because again reporting on corruption in Mexico just isn’t done that much. Maybe the American media doesn’t want to rock the boat. Imagine if American guns were supplied to those criminals? Now that would probably make the news.
News-Record Sets Record Straight: “Many Felons Don’t Heed Ban on Guns”
Are some politicians and anti-gun zealots just idealists, who believe that banning guns will make a criminal think twice about buying a gun – legal or otherwise? That seems to be the only logical answer we can come up with, and it is reinforced in a Greensboro News & Record story, which offers this thought:
“It’s not uncommon for convicted felons to carry firearms, even though they are prohibited by law from possessing such weapons, law enforcement officials say.
“Last year, the courts dealt with nearly 4,700 cases of possession of a firearm by a felon, state records show. That’s up from about 1,100 in 1997.”
But yet the politicians want to put in place gun restrictions that will only affect law-abiding citizens. Clearly, as this story confirms criminals just ignore the law – but what would you expect when they are CRIMINALS?
Police Go Where the Guns Are
Time and time again we question buybacks, new laws that restrict guns to law-abiding citizens and ask why don’t the police instead put more efforts to getting to the real problem, namely going after the bad guys directly. But now ABC 13 in Toledo, Ohio is reporting that local police are doing just that:
“Police are currently doing round-ups where violent criminals who carry guns hang out. It’s a problem plaguing the streets of Toledo.”
Finally, this sounds like a real solution to the problem. If you know where the criminals hang out, do sweeps instead of buybacks that won’t likely get guns off the streets!
Chicago Puts New Gun Laws in Place
Do you think the Supreme Court ruling is going to make it easier in Chicago for gun owners? Don’t count on it. The Chicago Tribune noted that while there was much to celebrate this Fourth of July weekend, there is reason for concern:
“Four days after the U.S. Supreme Court gutted Chicago’s longtime handgun ban, the City Council enacted new gun-control measures. Alderman voted 45-0 in favor Friday, even as some of them acknowledged how little the restrictions would do to quell violent crime.”
Note too that the Tribune wasted no ink to put just a bit of bias in the report. Did the Supreme Court really “gut” the ban, as much as overturn it? But should we expect more from our media? The irony isn’t lost on us that even those who voted for this measure know that it means nothing to criminals! The paper offered this quote from Ald. Ed Smith, 28th.:
“You cannot legislate criminals. They are going to be criminals no matter what. The people who intend to do crime, they are going to do it in whatever manner they can. They are going to get a gun wherever they can, and they are going to use it. They are not going to register their gun.”
We just have to wonder if it pained the writer(s) at the Tribune to actually use this quote?
Philadelphia Inquirer Editorial Off Target
In yet another anti-gun editorial the editors at The Philadelphia Inquirer takes aim, but is so off target it is incredible. Even the headline offers the extreme bias of “Ignoring guns’ toll.” The kicker in this piece sums it up:
“While five justices may ignore the 60,000 people killed and wounded yearly by handguns, the rest of the nation’s leaders must do everything within their power to stem the carnage.”
The SCOTUS, the NRA and other pro-gun groups are not ignoring these numbers at all. On the contrary, it is the mainstream media that is ignoring what these numbers mean! Did the editors at The Philadelphia Inquirer ignore what this case was about? It was about providing law-abiding citizens to have a level playing field with the criminals on the very mean streets of Chicago. This was a reaction to those who are not allowed to defend their homes, their families and themselves from (often armed) criminals!
Columbus Police to Target Criminals in Gun Sweeps
More good news out of Ohio: instead of massive new gun laws that will affect everyone, the city of Columbus is going to go after the criminal element instead. The Columbus Dispatch reports:
“Columbus city government and police leaders announced a new initiative to combat gun violence yesterday, but they weren’t specific about what the initiative will entail.
“The Columbus Police Gun Violence Reduction Program will be ‘proactive’ and ‘intelligence-based,’ officials said, focusing on gang members, career criminals and particular parts of the city.”
We like the focus on gang members, career criminals and even the notion that is about particular parts of the city. We just hope this “proactive” program is truly “intelligent” in how it works. We’ll be watching.
Rapper B.G. is Hopeful in Gun Case? Seriously?
What is with MTV? Can’t the liberal-minded “music” network see the writing on the wall, or at least its own Web site? While reporting about rapper, in an article titled ”B.G. Is Optimistic About Gun-Possession Case,” the news channel starts out by saying:
“This week, B.G. saw his friend Lil Boosie sent to jail after violating probation on a gun charge. His former Hot Boys bandmate Lil Wayne is expected to be sentenced to a year in prison for gun possession too. And last week, B.G. himself was charged with illegal gun possession in New Orleans.”
While the mainstream media goes on and on about the “culture” of guns, the real danger is the culture of violence and the embracement of a gangster (or is that gangsta) lifestyle by men like B.G. Worse, when caught red-handed, B.G. is downright smug. To MTV he says:
“My lawyers told me, don’t worry about nothing, they got it. They gonna take care of it. The police report was written up real, real bad, so I feel good about it.”
Well B.G, we at FirearmsTruth do hope you get it, as in the jail time you deserve. You and your celebrity thug friends are bad news for those of us who are law abiding. We just can’t afford the lawyers who will tell, “don’t worry about nothing.”
