Montana Bear Attack – Would Guns Have Made a Difference?

The debate over guns in national parks continues to rage, but it is worth considering following a recent report of a bear attack in Montana. USA Today notes:

“In a sobering reminder that bears are the bosses of the backcountry, one person was killed and two others injured in a bear attack Wednesday at the heavily occupied Soda Butte campground just outside Yellowstone National Park.”

Would the bears have been able to attack and take a life had anyone in the campground been armed?

Seattle Times Calls for Ban of Guns in City Parks

Following a recent shooting at Lake Sammamish State Park, guest columnist Ralph Fascitelli writes for The Seattle Times that guns should be banned in all public places, and offers a triad on how “gun control” is the answer. His idealized view on gun control argues that it will “reduce the chances of another shooting like the one at Lake Sammamish.” But we ask whether it really would? Read more

Pro Gun Ban Editorial Cherry Picks Key Points

Our sympathies go out to Chester Kulis, whose 20-year old brother was fatally shot in a robbery on a CTA train in 1972. That is a tragedy the Mr. Kulis has had to live with for nearly 40 years. He notes this in his argument that suggest “Gun ban’s defeat will backfire on society,” which he authored for the Norridge Harwood  Heights News. We see the passion in his argument, but think Kulis is off base on several points. Read more

Boston Herald Article Misses Point on Handgun Purchases

Yet another liberal politician is up in arms because he can’t get his way with gun laws, and the hometown papers are giving moral support. This isn’t New York, and it isn’t Chicago. This time it is Boston, where The Boston Herald noted that Gov. Deval Patrick believes the gun lobby is putting pressure on members of the House to oppose a bill that would restrict licensed gun owners from purchasing more than one firearm a month. Read more

WaPo Cites 80 Percent Figure Long After it Was Debunked

Do the editors at The Washington Post actually believe what they write or will they use false numbers just to prove a point? We know the paper is vehemently anti-gun, but is it creditable to quote a figure that most of the mainstream media has acknowledge is a made up number? In an editorial titled “U.S. falls short in helping Mexico end its drug war,” deputy editorial page editor Jackson Diehl quotes the “old 80 percent of guns come from the United States.” Hasn’t this number been debunked enough for Mr. Diehl? Apparently not. Read more

Huff and Puff Questions Gun Owners Bankruptcy Act

It is pretty much a known fact that if you file for bankruptcy that many of your possessions are safe from repossession. One category of items that have not been safe are guns, and while Ohio Representative John Boccieri introduced legislation that would protect a gun owner, the Huffington Post of course is in a huff and puff about it. Did Gun Buyback Mean to Collect Guns From Streets or Just Guns in General?

Another weekend, and yet one more gun buyback. This time the Charlotte Observer even offered a nice anti-gun spin that makes these events seem worthwhile:

“Organizers weren’t sure what to expect from the first gun buyback in the Grier Heights community. They would be happy, they said last week, if they recovered one gun from the streets of a neighborhood that’s seen its share of high-profile violence in the past few years. But just after 2 p.m. Saturday, community leaders stood in front of a stack of handguns and ammunition that had been exchanged for nearly $500 in gift cards.”

The question is whether the organizers should be happy? Read more

Who Guards the Guards: Mexican Prison Guards Released Prisoners, Lent Them Guns

We hear time and time from the American mainstream media how American firearms supposedly are fueling the war between the Mexican drug cartels. What isn’t reported nearly as much is the corruption south of the border. We know it is bad, but it seldom gets much pick up. Case in point, the Associated Press filed an interesting story this weekend, which received little pick up in the MSM. The facts are actually shocking:

“Mexican prosecutors say guards at a prison let inmates out and lent them guns to massacre 17 people at a party, then allowed them to return to their cells.”

Do you think this story will get much play? Probably not, because again reporting on corruption in Mexico just isn’t done that much. Maybe the American media doesn’t want to rock the boat. Imagine if American guns were supplied to those criminals? Now that would probably make the news.

Gun Traffickers Arrested in Chicago – What is the Source of the “Illegal” Guns

This past weekend we followed a story that was making the rounds, on how at least 25 individuals were arrested in Chicago on illegal drugs and gun trafficking charges. What is interesting about the latter charge is that only a few media outlets have noted that the guns have an international connection. Read more
