This is a very positive move because it sets limits to what a locally elected Mayor can do outside of his city. More states should follow the lead of West Virginia.

Hey, I was one of the guys at that buyback. It made me sick to see so many nice and beautiful guns to make rebar. Those of us trying to inform people of the value of the firearms were kicked off the premises and only permitted to be on public property, which was just a small patch of sidewalk. Anyone that stopped to ask for info was threatened with citation and those giving information were given warnings. However, in future events there will be ways for us gun enthusiasts to better appraise firearms for people. Of particular note is that there won't be any more gun buybacks at the location this one was held at, since there is overwhelming evidence that this event was a legally mismanaged mess.

Several of the guns lost were true pieces of art and history. One gun was a Winchester 1906, another few guns were listed as "Russian military guns" which could have been Mosins, SKSs or SVTs, and there were quite a few WW2 trainer rifles and an assortment of beautiful hunting guns. These were not crime guns. These were guns that any red-blooded American would be proud to own.

On a brighter note, I ended up saving one gun from becoming rebar! I saved a beautiful 1959 Winchester Model 12, my favorite shotgun of all time :)

As long as people continue to say that firearms cause violence there will continue to be violence.
Perhaps placing the blame on something we can see will get votes but it won't keep people safe.

Chuck-
You bring up excellent questions. My point was that firearms should be stored safely, the same way you would store any potentially dangerous item. I think putting oil rags and newspapers next to the furace is a bad idea!

But no I don't want any restrictions on how many firearms I own.

Stored properly? What exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean I should disassemble all my guns by removing the firing pin, bolt, or other mechanism and putting them in a gun safe?

Or that I should keep them unloaded except when in use?

Or is it okay if I keep one in my nightstand?

Can my kid take a gun to school if he leaves it in his trunk, so he can hunt after school, or if he goes hunting before school?

Can a rehabilitated ex-con keep a weapon in his home, to protect it from home invasion? What if the nature of his crimes, while felonious, were not violent? Can his family members own guns, and store them in a home they share with him?

I don't want the government putting ANY restrictions on how many guns I own, where or how I store them, or what I allow my children to do with them.

You quote the second amendment on your "About" page. I suppose we have different understandings of "abridged."

Absolutely, there is no way to obtain a permit in nyc, never mind the cost, they just turn you down with no explanation for doing so. I know this first hand. DENIED by other reason, two times, and that was years ago, today no way for the average law abiding citizen to get one, no way no how. REASON - OTHER!

Right on. When does it end. When the prisons are filled with all law abiding citizens and the criminals with the illegal weapons are running around shooting and stealing from everyone because they can. Something has to give. Enough is Enough is Enough.

As more and more law abiding citizens are being arrested for having grandpas guns and not knowing that they are illegal in NYC, one is to believe that your are right on that any gun is too many according to this mayor. Approximately a month ago a man on staten island, clearly a hunter was raided, arrested and charged with a multitude of crimes, one being child endangerment because his son also a hunter, had rifles in his bedroom closet. What can one do to protect oneself from the politicians and law enforcement agencies who are looking for any reason to arrest anyone, just to boost their conviction ratios. What a shame. We are supposed to have the best legal justice system in the world. I think it should be called legal injustice system. Thats my opinion.

Thank you for your positive comments in regards to this case. It is a shame that the criminal justice system put a 55 year old disabled man who had an antique gun collection into prison. He has been restoring and collecting for more than 30 years. His life will never be the same as he is labeled a violent felon and will live with that for the rest of his life. He is incarcerated on Rikers Island as he waits to be sent god knows where. He never had a chance to tell his story. No one would help him and he is paying quite possibly with his life. He is a very sick man on 12 medications per day. I know this because I am his wife and had a front row seat to this terrible ordeal. We still do not know how this happened. We were under the impression that our legal system is the best in the world. All I can say is shame on all of those responsible for this injustice. Also, yes other collectors, please beware, If you would like more info on this I would surely be willing to give you first hand information from the arrest to the surrender. Again, thank you for your insight into this unfortunate story.
