Boston Herald Article Misses Point on Handgun Purchases
Yet another liberal politician is up in arms because he can’t get his way with gun laws, and the hometown papers are giving moral support. This isn’t New York, and it isn’t Chicago. This time it is Boston, where The Boston Herald noted that Gov. Deval Patrick believes the gun lobby is putting pressure on members of the House to oppose a bill that would restrict licensed gun owners from purchasing more than one firearm a month. Read more
Firing Back: 8,300 Guns Destroyed But is it a Celebration?
Tamco Steel Mill has hosted an event that turned 8,300 confiscated guns into rebar for upgrades to freeways and bridges reported The Los Angeles Times. Known as “Project Isaiah,” this annual event, which has run for 17 years, takes a “stash of weapons taken from criminals” to the Tamco Steel Mill, where the guns are destroyed.
Said Deputy Bill Brauberger: “It’s pretty exciting and very visual.” We think it is sad and unnecessary. Read more
PoliceOne’s Ron Avery Offers Practical Information on Concealed Weapons
Think the guy next to you is packing heat? Should you try to engage him, should you call 911 as fast as you can on your mobile phone? That’s what many in the mainstream media would have you believe, because clearly only a dangerous person would want to carry a gun. Read more
Huff and Puff Questions Gun Owners Bankruptcy Act
It is pretty much a known fact that if you file for bankruptcy that many of your possessions are safe from repossession. One category of items that have not been safe are guns, and while Ohio Representative John Boccieri introduced legislation that would protect a gun owner, the Huffington Post of course is in a huff and puff about it. Did Gun Buyback Mean to Collect Guns From Streets or Just Guns in General?
Another weekend, and yet one more gun buyback. This time the Charlotte Observer even offered a nice anti-gun spin that makes these events seem worthwhile:
“Organizers weren’t sure what to expect from the first gun buyback in the Grier Heights community. They would be happy, they said last week, if they recovered one gun from the streets of a neighborhood that’s seen its share of high-profile violence in the past few years. But just after 2 p.m. Saturday, community leaders stood in front of a stack of handguns and ammunition that had been exchanged for nearly $500 in gift cards.”
The question is whether the organizers should be happy? Read more
Sonia Wolff Editorial on Buying a Gun
Maybe part of the mainstream media’s problem with guns is that there are preconceived notions on what gun owners are like; and were those prejudices used to describe other groups some might rightfully say it is narrow minded.
But in an interesting editorial for The Los Angeles Times writer Sonia Wolff explains her process from non-gun owner, who had a strong moral view towards not owning a gun, to a recent gun owner. Maybe more liberal, anti-gun types should give this a read and take a chance to understand the issue before offering an opinion.
Sonia Wolff: The reluctant gun owner
Huff and Puff Looks at “More Guns = Less Crime” Argument With Shaky Logic
In writing for the Huffington Post, Dennis A. Henigan, Brady Center Vice President and author of Lethal Logic attempts to question the concept of “more guns = less crime.” Maybe he missed the fact that gun ownership continues to climb, yet crime is down? Instead he offers some interesting, but flawed points. Read more
Chuck Hoffman Rebuts Sacramento Bee Writer Over Gun Violence Claims
We take aim at the mainstream media a lot. So we do like to point out those times when someone actually takes a similar stance regarding anti-gun bias. Chuck Hoffman offered a guest commentary for The Oakland Tribune, firing back at Sacramento Bee writer Dan Morain. Read more
Gun Sales Have Been Increasing, but Not Just Since When Obama Was Elected
The mainstream media reported over and over, and over again that the election of President Barack Obama in November 2008 caused a sudden increase in gun sales. But that actually isn’t quite true; at least when you look at the numbers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); as well as the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) reports Barrons. The news site noted that domestic commercial firearms-industry sales are currently estimated to be in excess of $4.1 billion, but more interestingly this isn’t a sudden increase. Read more
10News.com Story Paints Bad Picture of Gun Owners
Tempers run hot on many issues, and this is an unfortunate part of any debate. Worse still is that often times the media throws fuel on the fire, as 10News in San Diego did in reporting on California’s open carry law. The news station, in a piece titled “Gun Advocates Take Aim At State’s Leader’s Proposal,” also takes aim but at all gun owners, making many sound like extremists. The news station notes:
“San Diego Assemblymember Lori Saldana is getting threats and being confronted by armed protesters over her latest legislation, which would ban guns in public.”
The news station also noted that “a gun advocate claimed to have driven five hundred miles,” and had a “loaded weapon in a backpack.” The site describes him as a “blogger,” but no link was provided, which begs the question as whether this is in fact a credible source. No name was given, nor was a link, so how can we trust anything about this particular source? It makes for a colorful read, and puts Saldana in a great light as she responded:
”It reflects poorly on all the responsible gun owners when someone takes it to the extreme like this.”
What really reflects poorly is how this story was reported. It reflects poorly on credible journalism.
