Election 2010: NRA Launches “Trigger the Vote” – Tough Like Chuck
Election Day is just around the corner and we’ll be seeing all sorts of grass roots efforts that encourage to get people out to vote, and whilst many of these efforts have been from more left leaning groups, this year we’re seeing other efforts to get in on the political action. Read more
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Won’t Get NRA Endorsement
The NRA issued a statement this past weekend, noting the group will not endorse Senate Majority Harry Reid, who is fighting for his political career in this November’s upcoming mid-term election.
The official statement from the National Rifle Association:
Charlotte, NC -- In the coming days and weeks, the NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) will be announcing endorsements and candidate ratings in hundreds of federal races, as well as thousands of state legislative races.
Unless these announcements are required by the timing of primary or special elections, the NRA-PVF generally does not issue endorsements while important legislative business is pending.
The NRA-PVF also operates under a long-standing policy that gives preference to incumbent candidates who have voted with the NRA on key issues, which is explained in more detail here. Read more
The Hill Calls Obama “Gun-Friendly” – Is This Really the Case?
Should Democrats be upset that Obama hasn’t stood up to National Rifle Association? That’s the tone of a piece for The Hill by Bob Cusack, who quotes Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) as saying “I can’t even get a hearing (on gun control issues).” This has been a long and continued cry from the left-leaning media, which has repeatedly noted that the Democrats fear bring up the issue of guns. EPA Reviewing Petition to Regulate Lead Ammunition
Earlier this week, the EPA agreed to formally review a petition submitted by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD). The petition requests that the EPA ban the use of lead in firearms ammunition by exercising powers granted to the EPA under the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 (TSCA). Such a ban would cause the cost of ammunition to skyrocket because the cost of a replacement metal, like copper, is much more expensive. Copper is selling for $3.30 a pound on today’s spot market. Lead is only 91 cents a pound. Read more
Allentown Morning Call Doesn’t Call Out Biased Editorial
In an editorial for The Morning Call of Allentown, Paul Goldsmith and Joe Grace of CeaseFire PA wrote yet another twisted tale of what they think the NRA and gun owners actually stand for, and from the opening sentence they push their agenda with little regard for the facts. Read more
Firing Back: Maybe the Media is Changing After All
Chances are you won’t actually see more “pro gun” articles from the mainstream media, but the fact is that you might just see less from the MSM and more from gun magazines. According to Daily Finance, gun magazines are on the rise, while the rest of the mainstream media continues to falter. Read more
Dennis A. Henigan Huffs and Puffs About Obama Gun Policy
Last week the Brady Center fired back at President Obama with a press release noting that the POTUS should appoint a new director to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This was followed by a post from Brady Center Vice President and author Dennis A. Henigan on the Huffington Post. Read more
Think Progress Must Not Actually “Think” When Writing About the NRA
The left-wing political blog Think Progress apparently seems to “think” it knows the NRA better than the NRA itself. Of course, like many left-wingers this site and its editors also must believe that the NRA is just a right-wing political action committee, rather than a truly non-partisan group. In a slanted post (is there any other kind from Think Progress) titled “NRA Too Afraid Of Looking Weak To Fully Oppose Kagan” Ian Millhiser writes:
“No doubt when Obama leaves office – and none of these threats have actually materialized – the NRA will claim victory and use the opportunity to fundraise. In the meantime, however, lawmakers on Capitol Hill should ask whether they need to keep caving to the NRA.” Read more
Party Lines Not Drawn Over Kagan
The mainstream media tends to believe that guns are issue that is a key divide between Republicans and Democrats, but clearly this isn’t the case. The Omaha World-Herald is reporting that Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson has become the first Democrat to announce that he would vote against Elena Kagan’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. Read more
Ammoland Notes Another Challenge to California Ban on Ammo Shipments
It seems that if you can’t get guns out of people’s hands for some the next best thing to do is control the ammo they use. Our friends at Ammoland.com are reporting that the National Rifle Association (NRA) has joined with the Calguns Foundation, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, the Folsom Shooting Club and two individual truckers to challenge California’s upcoming ban on shipments of handgun ammunition to the state. Have you heard about any of this in the mainstream media? Probably not.
But as Ammoland.com notes:
“Assembly Bill 962 was signed into law last year. Starting in February 2011, the law will criminalize the delivery and transfer of handgun ammunition not done in face-to-face transactions. The law provides only a few exceptions to this shipping ban, and requires shipping companies to bear the burden of determining whether the recipient of a package containing handgun ammunition is covered by one of the exceptions before delivering the package. This will make shipping ammunition to California much more difficult, complicated, and expensive.”
We’ll be watching to see how this pans out, and whether the MSM bothers to report on it.
