Sponsor Special: Display Firearms From International Military Antiques

Owning a piece of history is something special. Owning a piece of history that is actually a machinegun requires a lot of special paperwork and hassle. The alternative is to get a historic item that doesn’t actually fire. While that might seem like half the fun is missing, think of half the fun you get for having a fantastic display item – one that is generally legal to own and still looks quite impressive.

International Military Antiques (IMA) is one of the premier sellers of such historical items, as well as other unique oddities and collectibles. We talked to owners Christian and Alexander Cranmer last fall about their business, how they got started and what the future might hold for collectors: Gun Collecting: IMA Offers an Alternative for Machinegun Collectors

And now in addition to parts kits, and replicas they are offering some fine resin guns as well.

International Museums: National Maritime Museum – Amsterdam

The museum building dates from 1656

The Dutch from their small nation built an empire based on trade and commerce, defended by its once powerful navy. This history can be experienced in Amsterdam’s National Maritime Museum, located in the city’s old harbor. Housed in the huge historical building of s’Lands Zeemagazijn – the main land store of the Amsterdam Admiralty, which has been used until 1973 by the Dutch Navy. The building, which was  designed by Daniël Stalpaert, dates from 1656 and at the time it was an architecture wonder, constructed on an artificial island created in the Amsterdam harbor. It was here that the war ships of the Dutch Republic were equipped. (Click on images for a closer view) Read more

AFP Reports on Gun Violence

Yet another example of how the twisted international media sees the United States. AFP, via the Turkish Press, attempted to paint the United States is the Old Wild West. Consider this passage, is this really news reporting:

The statistics are staggering, the stories heartbreaking, yet there is little chance that any amount of bloodshed will lead to stiffer gun controls in the United States in the foreseeable future.
“It’s not something that any politician thinks is winnable,” said Kristin Goss, a politics professor at Duke University and author of “Disarmed: The Missing Movement for Gun Control in America.”
Five years after the worst school shooting in US history left 32 people dead at Virginia Tech, another high profile slaying has raised fears that new self-defense laws allow armed vigilantes to kill with impunity.

The problem with this line of thinking again, is that it somehow tries to tie gun control with solving crime. These two events are connected and related, but gun control will not stop crime. Additionally, it is shameful that the media would suggest that self-defense laws are a license to kill.

Katie Pavlich ‘Fast And Furious’ Book Acknowledges Efforts By Others

David Codrea:

“In Interviews, Author Doesn’t Credit Reporters Who Broke Fast and Furious,” M. Catherine Evans of American Thinker posted today.

She’s referring to Katie Pavlich’s media tour promoting her new book, “Fast and Furious,” and specifically to work by this correspondent, Mike Vanderboegh of Sipsey Street Irregulars, and Seattle Gun Rights Examiner (among his many other journalistic hats) Dave Workman going unacknowledged.

Ms.Pavlich’s reply was posted as a follow-up, where she cites references crediting us for our work.

Because this has been brought to my attention before, and because it appears to be one of contention among our respective readerships, it’s appropriate that it be addressed in this column.

David Codrea: Gunwalker Johnny-Come-Latelies Helping To Give Holder An Escape Route

“Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash added his name to the chorus of legislators demanding Attorney General Eric Holder resign over Operation Fast and Furious,” The Daily Caller reported Sunday.

“On Monday, Texas Republican Rep. Randy Neugebauer joined the surge in demands for Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation over Operation Fast and Furious,” a related story informed us.

Those dragging this story kicking and screaming into the public consciousness since the beginning might be inclined to channel Bruce Willis’s “Die Hard” character and say “Welcome to the party, pal.” But a more appropriate response might be “Hold the phone.”

AWOL-to-date Republican opportunists resolutely licking their fingers and holding them up in the air to determine which way the political winds are blowing serves whom, exactly? This is a gift horse that needs to be looked squarely in the mouth—first, because what the hell took them so long to weigh in, and more seriously, is a non-commitment like “I think that maybe it’s time for Mr. Holder to step down” the hardest line these new evangelists are prepared to take?

Guns were walked, people are dead and he “thinks maybe”?

LA Times: Obama anti-gun? Says who?

According to the Los Angeles Times this week: “The NRA’s and Mitt Romney’s baseless hype continues to find an audience.” This editorial may suggest that President Obama is not anti-gun, and instead suggests that this is just hype from the NRA and Romney.

The editors note:

Obama hasn’t proposed any anti-gun legislation in his first term, and has rarely mentioned the topic. This makes us wonder how long the NRA and the politicians who do its bidding can continue to pretend there’s a wolf at the door before people look outside and discover that wolves are an endangered species. The answer, based on last week’s annual NRA convention, is apparently forever.

Of course this argument does not address this statement Obama made to Sarah Brady, which was that he was working on gun control, “but under the radar.” It also fails to note that the State Department ban the importation of M1 rifles from South Korea. It also fails to note anything about Fast and Furious, the ATF debacle, which allowed thousands of guns to walk to Mexico. The latter story has also been widely ignored by the media, will Obama’s culpability has never been fully made clear.

Usually a newspaper waits until the general election season to endorse a candidate, but this year it seems the Los Angeles Times is off to an early start.

The UK View of America: Gun Lobby Creates Violent America

To hear the UK press talk about the problem of gun violence in America, it isn’t one of crime, it is the gun lobby. The UK-based Guardian newspaper offered this commentary this week:

America’s deadly devotion to guns

There are around 90 guns for every 100 Americans yet, despite 85 fatal shootings a day, the mighty US gun lobby is as powerful as ever. In the wake of Trayvon Martin’s killing, Gary Younge reports on the country’s deadly attachment to firearms.

The problem with this argument is that it assumes that it is the law-abiding were doing shooting. Yet just as in the UK, criminals will find a way to get guns regardless of the law.
