Gun Safety “Daunting” Claims WDBJ

How does WEDJ7.com see the issue of control gun? In a word: “daunting.” This is how the news site reported the issue in a piece on Virginia gun control. The story began with this passage:

The Virginia Center for Public Safety plans a vigil for victims of gun violence Monday at the state Capitol. Members also will seek the ear of state legislators to encourage them to toughen the state’s gun laws.
Their task is daunting. Republicans took control of the Senate and strengthened their majority in the House of Delegates in last fall’s election, improving the chances of a conservative agenda that will include a number of bills favored by gun-rights supporters.

This is a disgraceful example of mainstream media bias. It not only plays politics, blaming Republicans for the gun laws, but implies that gun violence is a political issue in the process!

Media Confusion on Pellet Guns

Every time there is a tragic shooting many that have no understanding of the issue jump on board to explain it. First, this is a remarkable phenomenon that seemingly only occurs with guns. Consider last week’s tragic cruise line disaster – only maritime experts have weighed in on the mainstream media explaining how it happened, how it could have been avoided and why these things don’t happen every day. With the issue of guns however, everyone is an expert – typically those who don’t understand guns.

The Medical Press offered a story this week titled, “Pellet guns and children” to offer thoughts and insight following a tragic shooting of a young boy who had a pellet gun that he aimed at a police officer. Instead of having a true expert comment on this issue, writer Tyra Damm writes:

I grew up with no exposure to guns, no interest in weapons. I don’t understand the fascination that people have with shooting virtual people on video games or shooting real people with pellets or paintballs. But I recognize it exists and that it’s the culture I’m raising my own children in.

She is clearly no expert. In fact, in reading her article we can’t tell if she has confused “pellet guns,” which are not toys and should never be used in games where one shoots another person, with Airsoft guns, which are used in such a game. From this point on the article digresses into explaining that girls play with Barbie, and boys play at war. She does offer some reasonably sound advice in the proper way to use a pellet gun, as in with adult supervision, but by this point the issue is clouded that we have to wonder why she bothered in the first place!

Gawker Stereotypes “Cowboy” Who Sees Stereotypes

There is a certain level of irony in a recent post by liberal leaning media gossip site Gawker, which noted: “Cowboy Won’t Teach Gun Safety to Muslims Because They All Want to Kill Him.” From the get go this is biased… is it necessary for them to label Crockett Keller, a Texas-based country store owner, as “Cowboy,” but it goes even further when the post also declares him a “cardboard cutout.”

In fairness his store is called “CowboyMart,” so maybe the “Cowboy” part is fair, but there is irony in the fact that they labeled him a “cartboard cutout.” It goes a step further as the story notes that Crockett Keller won’t in fact teach his class to Muslims.

Gawker’s take:

“As you might expect, many people support Keller’s positions on the issues and believe he’s a true patriot who’s speaking the truth and being honest and etc., insert your own flag-wrapped crazy crap here. But refusing to teach people based on religious grounds is just as against the law in Texas as supporting the current, democratically elected leader of the free world is against the law in Crockett Keller’s world, so the Texas Department of Public Safety has opened an investigation into his radio statements and education policies. What will happen if the state forces him to treat people fairly based on their religion? He’ll stop teaching those lessons! And then probably run for governor based on an anti-government platform.”

How is that above statement any less stereotyping? And why do liberal sites have to push the “flag-wrapped crazy crap” line. Liberals always seem to be annoyed when their patriotism is questioned but then make crazy statements such as the one above. So again, a truly ironic take on this issue.

Lansing State Journal Offers Anti-Gun Flak Talking Points as News

This week The Lansing State Journal offered a “news” story – “news” in the loosest sense – titled “Talk about access to guns before sending child to a friend’s house.” The article was filled with anti-gun concerns from The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Center to Prevent Youth Violence and suggested that “Asking Saves Kids.”

What it doesn’t suggest is actually TALKING to the kids and teaching gun safety. Instead it suggests that parents ask other parents, “do you have guns in your house.”

Yes, parents should want to keep their kids safe, but this argument is insulting, and it suggests that gun owners are generally irresponsible. It is an insulting story and only offers opinion from anti-gun groups. No gun rights group is mentioned, no insight from the NRA or other organizations is offered. And yet this somehow passes as “news.”

GUN SAFETY IN THE HOME – THE FIRST PRIORITY!

An ever increasing number of people are purchasing firearms for home protection today.  Many of these people are first time firearms owners who have decided for various reasons to add a layer of protection for their families.   This means that many homes with firearms will also have children present and while good firearms safety storage measures are important to block access to all unauthorized persons, its especially important to consider how to safeguard your children as well as to introduce them to any firearms you have in your home. F.A.T.S – FireArms Training Simulator

I recently had the opportunity to try out the F.A.T.S training system after taking a level two Urban Pistol class at the Police Academy range. The class was fantastic but after it was over, I peeked in the room where the F.A.T.S training sessions were being conducted. F.A.T.S stands for FireArms Training Simulator. It is an entirely interactive system that uses a computer program, a large screen and very realistic firearms that are loaded with computer chips instead of ammunition. It looks somewhat like a big video game, but it is definitely not a game.

The F.A.T.S system is used in police and military training. It costs upwards of $150,000 and was designed to be used with many types of firearms – however, each type of firearm added to the system costs several thousand dollars. The software on this F.A.T.S system was designed to simulate police calls and stops and the firearms were all corded (i.e. attached) to the computer. There are systems where the firearms are not corded, and the guns have magazines filled with nitrogen gas to simulate recoil. With certain software, it is also possible to create scenarios where the suspects will not only be shooting back at you from the video screen, but the instructor can launch soft foam projectiles at you from a device called the Hostile Fire Simulator. In this case you would need to make use of available cover in the room to avoid being hit. Read more

Sour Grapes from AP on Obama’s Gun Policy?

This week the Associated Press, via ABC News, offered a story titled “PROMISES, PROMISES: Obama yet to Act on Gun Safety.” This highly biased piece suggested President Obama was completely lax on gun laws.

The article even offered commentary from Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke, thus implying that Obama has done nothing anti-gun. Of course the facts aren’t so cut and dry.

The article failed to note anything about the ATF debacle known as Fast and Furious, nor did it bother to note that Obama himself reportedly said to Sarah Brady, one of the Brady Campaign founders, that gun control is on the agenda, but just “under the radar.”

This shameful article implies that Obama is soft on guns. It doesn’t note the blocked importation of M1 rifles from South Korea, nor does it note that the EPA had listened to a proposal that would ban lead ammunition. And finally it failed to note that Obama appointed two Supreme Court Justices who are each extremely anti-Second Amendment.

Obama is extremely dangerous to our Second Amendment rights, whether AP wants to believe so or not.
