Houston Chronicle Blog Post Notes Mexico’s Plea

This week in a blog post for the Houston Chronicle it was noted, “Mexico’s plea to Texas and USA: No more guns.” This post shares some facts, but we think let’s Mexican President Felipe Calderon off the hook a bit:

Calderon often points out that if the United States wants Mexico to do its part to halt the flow of drugs north, the U.S. will have to do more to help Mexico stop the flow of guns from the United States.

The post added:

Calderon’s message is likely to not be well-received by some vocal gun aficionados here who are staunchly opposed to government meddling with the rights of gun owners, including doing anything that will either make it tougher to get guns or lead to the U.S. government keeping better track of who owns them.

They say legitimate, law-abiding gun owners should not be further inconvenienced or have their Constitutional rights eroded. They also point to U.S. government efforts, such as the horribly botched Operation Fast and Furious.

Calderon says guns are pouring into his country from the United States and if the United States wants a peaceful Mexico and a better partner in the drug war, it is going to have to do more to help Mexico keep guns exported from here out of the hands of criminals.

These are all the facts, and we don’t see a lot of bias, but it still allows Calderon to offer his points, which we simply don’t agree with. For one, maybe Mexico should do its part first and stop the flow of illegal drugs. But again, this is also true that American’s shouldn’t lose their Second Amendment rights because a president of another country demands it. Maybe he should remember who won in 1848!
