Who Guards the Guards: Seized Guns Missing in Prince George’s County

At least 23 guns could be back on the streets in Prince George’s County reported The Washington Post this past weekend. The paper, which noted that a single officer had seized the guns, offered this information:
“More than 20 guns seized by a state-run firearms task force in Prince George’s County are unaccounted for, and investigators believe that one of the weapons was used in the shooting of an off-duty police officer late last year, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation.”
How do 23 guns go missing? We’re not really sure. What is bothersome is that there is no idea where these weapons could be:
“In the Prince George’s case, police are investigating whether the guns were stolen and sold back on the street, law enforcement sources said.”
While law-abiding citizens have a difficult time even obtaining a firearm, it seems criminals just need to wait for seized guns to make their way back to the streets.
