Who Guards the Guards: Off-Duty Police Officer Shoots Self

Time and time again the anti-gun zealots talk about the dangers of guns, but are we to feel safe if the police are still armed and we are not? Most law-abiding gun owners know to respect the firearms, but sometimes we must wonder about those sworn to protect us. The Daily Herald noted this week:
“An off-duty University of Illinois at Chicago police officer was injured after his gun accidentally discharged in a Vernon Hills Best Buy store Monday evening.”
How exactly did the gun “accidentally discharge?” Well, the story adds:
“When the five-year vet of the UIC police force pulled up his pants, his finger pressed the trigger and the gun fired.”
Note that this happened in a store, so not only did the UIC officer accidentally fire his gun, but it went off in a location where others could have been hurt in the process.
