Who Guards the Guards: Ex-Oklahoma Narcotics Agent Accused of Gun Trafficking

While we continue to dispute that the vast majority of guns used by Mexican cartels actually originate in the United States, we do agree that there is some trafficking across the border. One key fact that is often overlooked by the mainstream media and even politicians both in Mexico and the United States is who is doing the trafficking. This week NewsOK is reporting that in a recent case it was someone in local law enforcement who was involved.

In this particular case, the paper notes that former state narcotics agent Francisco Javier Reyes of Oklahoma City recruited two friends – one of who is now reportedly dead – to buy firearms, which were transported to Mexico. The paper reported:

“Reyes was an agent with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control. He is charged with two felony gun trafficking charges, which allege he used a false name to acquire firearms, and a third felony gun trafficking charge, saying he knowingly and illegally sold firearms to an unlicensed dealer.”

The potential number of guns involved is also quite high. According to the paper ATF agents in Dallas seized 28 assault rifles in Dallas, with 11 being traced to Oklahoma, while on another occasion another 30 assault rifles were seized. Agents also tracked a .50-caliber rifle back to Reyes.

According to News9.com, Reyes also bought many guns directly:

“Reyes is accused of using a false name to buy five A-K 47s [sic] from Outdoor America, as well as transferring a 50-caliber Barrett rifle to someone who wasn’t licensed to own it. ATF agents said Reyes would also use his residence at the Regency Tower in downtown Oklahoma City and other places across the state to pay others to purchase guns and then complete the work to have the weapons sent to Mexico. Authorities said they believed the guns were making it into the hands of Mexican drug cartels.”

Given the number of weapons involved it seems that Reyes could be the source of many of the American guns used in Mexico by the cartels.
