New York Daily News Headline Says It All

The word “fanatic” is actually the root of “fan,” as in “sports fan” or a “fan” of a musical group. But more and more “fanatic” is used interchangeably with “extremist” as well. So when The New York Daily News uses this headline we question it:

“Female gun fanatics on the rise: More women, like ‘three gun’ champ Tasha Hanish, buying guns”

While the article is mostly a human interest piece, we do ponder why the word enthusiast wasn’t used instead of fanatic?
