Gun Protestors not Worthy of Coverage Covered

While you were enjoying a quiet Sunday morning yesterday, a handful of people in Denver Colorado were protesting a Starbucks. Most local Denver news agencies covered the story through the Associated Press. The AP mentions basic facts, like what the protestors want and what Starbuck’s response is, but fails to mention the number of protestors. By holding back numbers, the AP is showing support for a cause it is sympathetic with.
The protestors want Starbucks to change its policy of allowing law-abiding citizens from carrying handguns into the coffee café. Starbucks response is that it doesn’t want to get in the middle of a gun-control debate. The AP goes on the mention two Democratic Senators who want to enhance screening of potential gun owners. But how many protested and at how may Starbucks in Denver?
I had to do some digging. As mentioned, most news sources based stories completely on the AP. The Denver Post actually used a reporter who interviewed people. More importantly, The Denver Post tells its readers about 20 protestors gathered outside one Starbucks in the city. There was also at least one person who confronted the protestors and questioned their cause.
The AP failed to mention the numbers because in the end, the Starbucks Denver protest was a bust. Denver has a population of over half a million in a state with a population well over four million. There are around 200 Starbucks in Colorado, most of which are within a 50 mile radius of Denver.
Twenty people protesting a few hours at one Starbucks is not news worthy. That’s why the AP failed to mention the numbers. The cause was the story for the AP. It sympathies with gun control and will take any event, no matter of tiny, to foreword the cause of taking away your 2nd Amendment Rights.
