Chicago Daily Herald Op-Ed Misses Value of “Old Guns”

Why is that people think old guns aren’t worth anything? Do these people not watch antiques road show. Old cars, old comic books, old records are always thought of to be “priceless,” and often times aren’t. Yet time and time again the media seems to belittle the mere consideration that maybe an old gun is worth something of value. Case in point: Chuck Goudie, writing for The Chicago Daily Herald offers:

“In Chicago, guns are apparently more valuable than grades.”

While we certainly think education is important, we note that Goudie writes this while speaking of a gun buy-back, comparing the money offered for a handed in gun versus that paid for scholarly achievement:

“You will be able to turn in your trusty assault rifle and receive a $100 prepaid MasterCard. That is way better than the $50 pay-for-grades that public school officials offered students last year. And that $50 was for an A, so it actually took some work.”

This is true, but the $50 is paid to students for improving their efforts. Show me a single assault rifle that retails for $100 anywhere? And older firearms can be worth far more. So Goudie has a point, and maybe education needs to be stressed. But this should be the job of parents and their children. Should schools even be required to “bribe” students to work harder?
