Buffalo Business First Editorial Fails to Look at How Guns Save Lives Too

In a rant-filled editorial for The Buffalo Business First, Gary Burns doesn’t pull any punches. He states clearly: “killing – that’s what guns are for.” He goes on to cite several examples of tragic shootings, but fails to offer so much as one example of how a firearm saved a life. Thus he never notes, “protection – that’s always what guns are for.”

How many times do we hear the story of someone who faced a break-in, or was otherwise confronted by a bad person with bad intentions? The truth is that we don’t hear these stories, because the media often fails to report on those stories. This is regrettable because it feeds anti-gun writers, such as Burns, with ammunition to cite the worst cases of the use of guns, and makes it hard to quickly point to any cases where guns saved lives.

But as with so many other examples of bias-filled editorials, this one also fails to note key legal cases such as Heller vs. D.C., or McDonald vs. Chicago. And yet somehow Burns can write:

“Instead, angry men foam at the mouth at the thought of increased gun regulation. They see dark forces lurking in the shadows, ever ready to take away their ‘rights.’ you see.”

What we see is that when the Heller ruling essentially overturned the ban on gun ownership in D.C., city officials instilled a lengthy process for individuals to obtain guns. The same happened in Chicago, and now the state’s governor is calling for stricter gun laws. The latter two cases are examples of angry men foaming at the mouth indeed, but those angry men are Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, and they’re foaming at the thought of how they can increase gun regulation.
