WNYC Radio Has Nice Sound Bites, But Few Facts

By the way WNYC radio spun it, it sounds like NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg is really just a mayor with a reasonable gun control policy. Here is a sample of what he said:

“BLOOMBERG: There’s federal law that says that criminals can’t have guns and we should enforce that law and get guns off the streets nothing wrong with the Second Amendment.”

Sorry Mike, and sorry WNYC, but I’m not buying it, and we’re not playing along. Mayor Bloomberg makes it sound like he’s concerned just about criminals, but neither he says, nor WNYC mentions that in New York City it is almost impossible to legally obtain a handgun legally. The city has requires a lengthy and Byzantine process, costing applicants hundreds of dollars and taking months. This isn’t merely a background check in New York City, but rather an exercise in frustration meant to discourage anyone from attempting it in the first place.

Of course most of New Jersey is on par with New York’s Byzantine laws. But that doesn’t stop Newark Mayor Cory Booker from telling WYNC that he has no problem with legally owned firearms.

“BOOKER: I’m not concerned about law-abiding citizens having access to guns. Not one shooting in my city last year was by somebody who went, had a background check, bought a gun and shot somebody in my city – does not happen. What we’re concerned with is these myriad of laws that create the flow of illegal weapons into our cities.”

He has no problem with law-abiding citizens, because if Mayor Booker has his way it will be illegal to own a gun.
