Who Guards the Guards: Will SWAT Gear End up in Mexico

We’ve reported how various firearms and other police equipment has gone missing, but if the news reports that the Mexican drug cartels are using SWAT gear we’ll have a pretty good idea where it came from now. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting that the various “guns, ammunition and assorted tactical gear were stolen Thursday from a sports utility vehicle assigned to a member of the Dallas police SWAT team.”

This is no small problem. According to paper this theft netted a rifle, handgun, uniforms and body armor, as well as “hundreds of rounds of ammunition for both weapons , a police radio and a ‘flashbang’ device.” The question we have is why was this stuff left in an SUV parked at an apartment complex? Shouldn’t this type of gear be under better supervision?
