Was NYC Mayor Bloomberg Serious?

This week New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg made a very surreal statement while talking to WNYC radio’s Bob Hennelly. When questioned where there was a concern that a gun owner, with a permit, could be too drunk to drive, the mayor responded:
“If you are in a bar and you see somebody intoxicated and think they might have a gun I know what I would do, I’d either leave that bar or call the cops. I don’t want to get shot.”
Who was this aimed at exactly (no pun intended)? In New York City it is virtually impossible to get a permit to carry a firearm, unless it is for a business-related reason. So what Bloomberg or Hennelly going against police officers who drink too much? It seems that way by Hennelly’s less cryptic comments at the end of the piece:
“Since 2007 the NYPD requires all officers on or off duty who fire their weapons and wound someone – to submit to a breathalyzer test.”
While we agree that it is a bad idea to have a gun while you go out drinking, it just seems like Bloomberg is taking another pot shot – that time I intended to make the pun.
