Reuters: Mexican Cartels Shop in Texas

You’d think by now that this story would have been played out. For the past several months the mainstream media has reported how Mexican drug cartels head north of the border in search of firearms – suggesting that guns are available to anyone who just strolls in looking to buy guns.

It evokes a scene from the first Terminator movie, where Arnuld walks into a gun store and starts rattling off guns, almost as face as he later empties the magazines. The problem is that at the time of making of the film, as well as today for that matter, you can’t just go into a legit gun store and buy an “Uzi 9mm” – at least not the fully automatic version with the military snub nose barrel! The movie would have you believe otherwise, but that’s fine. It is a work of fiction, and thus artistic license is involved.

Not so with Reuters, which this week ran a story entitled ” Mexico cartels go bargain gun shopping in Houston.” It has the passage:

“Guns like the Barrett M-82 sniper rifle, the AK-47 and Bushmaster .223 are among those favored by cartel hitmen that slaughtered some 6,300 people in Mexico border cities like Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana last year.”

The truth is that maybe those guns, notably the AK-47, which features prominently in the story, is a favored weapon. But as with those John Kerry presidential ads that lead you to believe you could buy a fully automatic military version of said firearm, the simple fact is that those aren’t readily available for sale!
