Orwellian Newspeak Targets Firearms Ownership

The bumper sticker slogan, “Gun Control isn’t about guns it’s about Control” is a cleaver way of summing up how freedom loving Americans feel about their 2nd Amendment Right. The recent Supreme Court case, DC v Heller, upheld firearm ownership and the exercise thereof on federal property. After this holding by The Court, control freaks have resorted to a form of Newspeak that has been creeping into legislation and news stories.
Those who want to abridge our 2nd Amendment Right can’t win on the facts so they are changing tactics and are trying to win with emotion and fuzzy logic. “Gun Control” is being replaced with ‘Gun Safety Legislation.” Safe words like, “illegal guns”, “curbing gun violence”, “sensible measures” and “common sense” are being used to frame the debate in favor of taking away our firearms. Only a loony gun-touting maniac could be against “Common Sense Gun Safety Legislation.”
The term “assault weapon” is an older example of today’s newspeak. In the 1990’s a confusing set of accessories could turn a hunting rifle into a banned “assault weapon”. It didn’t matter that the working parts, rate of fire and cartridge type didn’t change.
Terms like “Law Enforcement Protection Act”, “Gun Show Loophole” and “The Foreign Felon Gun Prohibition Act” are being used to forward gun control legislation that targets your 2nd Amendment Right. The gun hating media is only to ready to change its language in this battle.
Words have meaning and we frame our world outlook according to them. Those of us who want to keep our firearms must fight back against Newspeak. Newspeak is a velvet shackle that won’t bite into the flesh but restrains just the same. When you come across this attempt to change the debate, write editorials to the news outlet blasting the tactics. Inform other freedom loving Americans of what is going on so we may retain the Rights given to us in the Constitution. Once a Right is taken away, it takes a revolution to get it back. And revolutions are a messy affair that should be avoided when possible.
