Officer Killed Defending An Estranged Wife
North St. Paul police officer Richard Crittenden was shot dead on Labor Day with his own gun during a violent struggle with a man who lunged at his estranged wife and the slain officer with a burning rag. Crittenden pushed the women out of harm’s way but left himself vulnerable. The man, Devon Dockery, was able to wrestle Crittenden’s gun from him and shoot the officer dead.
Dockery then shot Crittenden’s partner in the wrist. She was able to return fire and kill him. Sadly, Dockery’s wife Stacey Terry had a restraining order against him that he had violated a week earlier. District Judge Edward Wilson allowed Dockery to be released from jail for the violation when he promised in court that he would obey the no-contact order and act in a law-abiding way. A piece of paper and a promise weren’t enough to restrain Crittenden’s murderous rage.
Violence against estranged wives is a story that makes media headlines. This is especially true if a firearm is used. Often the headline will somehow mention that a firearm was used in the crime, which is irrelevant. In this story a burning rag was the assaulting weapon initially used. It’s the assault, not the weapon that makes the crime. But our media implies that firearms are the crime. If we could only keep guns from the public estranged husbands wouldn’t attack their wives.
If we really want to stop these assaults the country should ban marriage. The population can be reeducated to the fact that monogamy causes the rage that an estranged partner has towards the other. If couplings are restricted by law to a two or three day period, violent urges based in jealousy and control won’t have time to manifest.
The Constitution’s 2nd Amendment gives each citizen the right to own arms. Nothing in the Constitution says we have a right to marry or hold another under the slavery of love. In fact the 13th Amendment makes slavery illegal. If the United States wants to battle domestic violence while preserving civil rights, the only logical thing to do is outlaw marriage and any other attempts at monogamy.
Of course I’m being absurd. But so is our media when it comes to gun control. A firearm may be the instrument of violence but it isn’t the cause. The criminal is the cause. Many everyday items can be used as a weapon so it’s impossible to make everyone safe from criminal violence. Please, let us keep our 2nd Amendment Rights so we can protect ourselves from the bad guys.
