My Goodness, MyCentralNewJersey.com Really Should Get the Facts Straight

Editorials are fine when the writer argues with points. But when the writer of an editorial just spouts off nonsense it should fall into something that isn’t even defended by the First Amendment of our constitution, namely “DANGEROUS SPEECH.” Case in point, this argument of the “facts” of gun laws on the MyCentralNewJersey.com Web site:

“The Second Amendment was written as follows: ‘A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’

“I cannot see how these words mean that there should be ‘gun shows’ where anyone can buy an Uzi, a missile launcher or any other weapon that our military uses. Why has our government allowed so many guns to be in our country? There were over 9,000 murders by shootings in our country last year. In England and other countries in Europe the number of murders by shooting in all these countries totaled less than 50.”

Is the writer of this blog post even a legit journalist? So much of this posting was nonsense, but let’s debunk a few things. First, we all know that you can’t really buy an Uzi at an average gun show. At least not in the way the writer believes. And you certainly can’t buy a missile launcher “or any other weapon that our military uses.”

The other point is that the writer is incorrect in the number of murders by shooting in Europe. According to a story in the U.K.’s Independent newspaper:

“The Gun Control Network, which campaigns for tougher restrictions on firearms, disclosed the figure, which was a sharp drop on 2007, when 51 gun-related deaths were recorded in England, Wales and Scotland.”

The paper adds:

“The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies at King’s College London said its research also suggested the number of gun-related deaths was falling since reaching a peak eight years ago.

“The centre’s director, Richard Garside, said: “‘Gun homicide in England and Wales is low compared with such countries as the United States, Australia, France and Italy.’”

Note that this says that gun homicide in England and Wales is low compared to the United States, but also France and Italy. Does the writer in New Jersey forget that organized crime in Italy remains a problem? Does she (Lois Romano) think the gangster throw stones at each other?

But that’s just more facts that get in the way of her posting. She is one of those rare types that thinks only the police, and the military need guns? So I would like to ask her, why do the police need guns if private citizens aren’t allowed to have them? And why do we need a military? Shouldn’t we just get rid of all guns, weapons as well as the police and army and hope for the best? That seems along her line of thinking.
