Many Illegal Guns Are Stolen, Is This News?

One argument going around and around and around from the mainstream media seems to be that “most illegal guns started out as legally owned guns.” Once one firearm opponent made this statement the MSM jumped on it, and suddenly guns were somehow (magically) purchased legally by a wannabe criminal and handed immediately to a real criminal. But now Washington state’s KNDO is reporting that the police are finding that most illegal guns are… gasp! …stolen! While this is still not good news, it is interesting that this is seldom addressed by the mainstream media, or by anti-gun groups.

“Police tell KNDO the guns involved in these incidents are usually stolen.

“‘Almost always when we recover guns from gang members, who are responsible for almost all the shooting we’ve had lately, they turn out to be stolen,’ said Capt. Greg Copeland, Yakima Police Department.”

Of course the anti-gun crowd will tell you that the solution is to keep guns out of everyone’s hands, so criminals can’t steal them. But we know criminals have even stolen from the police recently, such as the case in Florida where an officer had an H&K submachine gun stolen from his car in broad daylight!

The other problem with this “logic” is that the criminals probably aren’t targeting firearm owners specifically, but are doing their smash and grab jobs and finding some firearms in the process. The word of warning is to keep the guns locked up. But if criminals are so brazen to steal guns while committing a robbery, isn’t that proof enough that home owners should be able to have firepower to defend themselves?
