Firing Back: Illegal Guns on the World Stage

The Daily Nation posted a story that says that there are at least 10,000 illegal firearms in Kenya and that these pose a threat to the nation’s national security. No doubt some American news organization will figure out of a way of spinning this and blaming American guns.
However, this is worth noting that an accompanying photograph showed some “2,490 illegal firearms go up in flames.” This photo from March 17, 2009 shows guns that clearly are AK-47 or some version of the famous Soviet-designed firearm. This is worth noting, simply because it highlights the sheer number of these guns that made it around the world.
So where is the outrage against the Soviet Union? Well, OK, the country doesn’t exist any longer. But it is interesting that problems in Mexico are blamed on American guns, but no one blames Africa’s woes on the now defunct Evil Empire.
