Firing Back: AK-47s on American Streets

When American guns are found in Mexico it is big news. When illegal firearms of foreign origin are found here, the mainstream media usually blames “lax gun laws” for allowing such things to happen.

CarolinaLive.com, the Web site for News Channel 15, posted a story (accompanied by video) that highlights that Horry County police officers have seized a lot of illegal firearms, including… an AK-47. That firearm isn’t an American made gun of course, so one wonders two things. One, what’s the point? And two, shouldn’t the mainstream media be concerned that Soviet-designed, and likely Chinese-made, firearms are fueling the American drug wars? This seems to be the source of many of the illegal weapons seized in Horry County:

“Most of the weapons shown on Tuesday (about 40) were taken during drug seizures, though police find them during all types of crimes.”

While this was just a “human interest” story, it was fairly unbiased, but more importantly it highlights that there continues to be a drug war being waged on American streets as well. One that most of the mainstream media has since moved on from unfortunately. But clearly this AK-47 is not alone, and this story should be proof that even if those dubious “loopholes” are closed and “straw buyers” are stopped, illegal guns will continue to be trafficked. So this reporter must ask why the average law abiding citizen should allow him/herself to be outgunned?
