Buddhists Arming Themselves in Thailand

If you listen to the left in America, especially the Hollywood elites, they would have you believe that Buddhists are non-violent pacifists who accept their fate while awaiting the next incarnation. Don’t believe it. And if you think Islam is a religion of peace, think again. Thailand shares a border with Malaysia and this area has a Moslem majority and there is violence.

Since 2004, nearly 3,900 people of both religions have been killed by shadowy Islamic insurgents who never claim responsibility for the attacks. Their favorite method of killing is by way of the gun. The Thai government has been unable to protect its citizens. In response, local activist groups have demanded that they be allowed to arm themselves.

The government has responded by distributing firearms to civilian forces and by subsidizing gun purchases. State employees, like teachers and others, are able to acquire gun licenses easily. But just like in the United States, there are anti-gun groups that want to take away the people’s right to self-protection. They claim that armed citizens make the situation more dangerous for the victims.

“In most of the killings, the insurgents are very careful not to cause too much damage to the weapons so they can steal them, and ammunition,” explained Sunai Phasuk, an analyst for Human Rights Watch in Thailand.

What about the people they damage?! If insurgents walked into my village and started killing fellow Buddhists I’d like the ability to defend myself! Lame thinkers like those at Human Rights Watch seem to think that taking away firearms will solve the violence problem. Guess what, before the invention of gunpowder so called insurgence would hack people to death with swords. And before that bludgeon them with clubs. It’s the nature of the beast.

I thank God that the framers of the Constitution included the 2^nd Amendment. There has always been and will always be criminal violence. Law abiding citizens need the ability to protect themselves if a community is to thrive. Living under constant fear without the means to defend oneself, one’s family and one’s community destroys human progress. Let the Buddhists in Thailand protect themselves and allow us to protect ourselves.
