Another Gun Buyback Program, Offers Unique Facts

The police department chief of services in Michigan City, Indiana is “proud of people” in his community for turning in their guns. Yes, indeed he’s proud that people “lined up 90 minutes ahead of the scheduled turn-in time,” to hand over their firearms where “each surrendered gun fetched a $50 Walmart gift card.”
Maybe he’s proud too of the biased reporting from The News Dispatch as well, which took the time to offer police opinion with no counter opinion, but labeled this a “local news story.” Case in point:
“Police Chief Ben Neitzel said they were especially happy to get small handguns off the streets because they are easier to conceal. He said the handguns will be ‘entombed’ in the glass display case in the police station lobby. The rifles will be destroyed, according to Neitzel.”
And this information doesn’t deserve challenge or counter point, now does it:
“According to police, guns in the home are more likely to be used in homicides, suicides or unintentional shootings than self defense. Neitzel said people with good intentions buy guns for self-defense, but they generally take longer to pull the trigger.”
It’s good to see that these people received a $50 Walmart gift card with the holidays coming up. But we still think that is this is another example where those turning in the guns essentially short changed themselves. In fact, we’d call this “selling your Second Amendment Rights for a small shopping spree at Walmart.”
