Wall Street Journal Thinks it Knows What is Best for New York

Just because the actual “Wall Street” is in New York, it seems that Robert M. Morgenthau of The Wall Street Journal thinks he knows what is best for the city. He writes that “The Last Thing New York is More Guns,” responding to proposed legislation that would legally allow those holding a concealed weapons permit in another state to carry a gun in New York City.
But his argument is as shaky as Wall Street these days. Here is his take:
“Speaking from a policy perspective, the last thing New York needs is a federal rule that lets more guns into the state. About 85% of the gun crimes in New York City are committed with weapons smuggled in from those other states that make gun ownership easy. Federal action is needed to shut down the pipeline that brings these guns to our streets.”
Even if 85 percent of gun crimes are committed with weapons from other states, that shouldn’t be a surprise. New York State has virtually no gun industry. So obviously any guns coming into the state originated elsewhere. I would imagine that at least 85 percent of the illegal heroin or cocaine sold by drug dealers are probably illegally smuggled into the state.
Let’s face it, owning a gun is tough in New York, but criminals are finding a way of getting guns anyway. Mayor Bloomberg and other lawmakers want to target other states for their woes. What about New York based organized crime that leaks out into other states? I don’t see Bloomberg or the other New York lawmakers saying much about that!
The proposed law is for legal gun owners. Why do those in the mainstream media, including Robert M. Morgenthau seem to think that reasonable gun legislation will make for more crime? Clearly illegal weapons are flowing into New York, so why can’t New Yorkers – or those merely living in New York (such as this reporter) – have legal rights to own guns?
